Young Advocates Institute

The North Carolina Coalition Against Sexual Assault (NCCASA)  is pleased to announce the Young Advocates Institute. This project is a bold yet strategic means of empowering and bringing together 200 teens, ages 13-17, and chaperones from across North Carolina for a weekend of prevention education, leadership development, and skill building seminars. The Institute will include interactive presentations and workshops on: healthy dating, bullying, cyber safety, healthy behaviors, and community involvement. Hosted at North Carolina Central University July 13-15, 2012, the Institute is guided by the framework of character building in order to give youth leaders the knowledge, confidence, and skill-sets to serve as peer educators within their communities.

Registration is now open. The deadline to submit a completed application is June 1, 2012.

 VAWA passes Senate

The National Alliance to End Sexual Violence (NAESV) applauds the Senate for passing the bipartisan Leahy/Crapo VAWA bill today to protect all victims of sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence and stalking. This week, the Senate conducted thoughtful debate and showed their commitment to seriously addressing these crimes. NAESV board president, Monika Johnson Hostler commented, "On behalf of the 56 state sexual assault coalitions and 1300 community rape crisis centers who provide the frontline response to victims every day, we appreciate provisions that support direct services, improve the criminal justice response to sexual assault, protect victims in public housing, and address the rape kit backlog." "It has been our privilege to work toward passage of VAWA in the Senate with the National Task Force to End Sexual and Domestic Violence Against Women that gathered input from over 2000 advocates from across the nation to inform this legislation," said Terri Poore, Vice President of NAESV. NAESV looks forward to continued collaboration with Congress to see a strong bill passed in the House and VAWA reauthorization legislation enacted.

The White Ribbon Campaign

Sponsored by the North Carolina Coalition Against Sexual Assault

The goals of the WRC are to get men to show their support for ending men’s violence against women, to raise awareness of this problem in the community, and to support organizations that deal with the consequences of men’s violence against women.

Wearing a white ribbon is a statement that you will never commit, condone, or remain silent about violence against women.  By doing this, you will foster a society free from violence against women, and you will be able to encourage reflection and discussion that leads to personal and collective action among men!
